Waterproof Apparel Worn Out?

How to Tell When It's Time to Replace Your Waterproof Apparel

We know a thing or two about rain gear that lasts. Our jackets are built to keep you dry through countless commutes, weekend epics, and everything in between. But here's the truth: even the best waterproof clothing has a finite lifespan when it's used regularly.

If you're out there riding, running, or hiking through Pacific Northwest downpours (or anywhere it pours), your gear is working hard. And just like any hardworking piece of equipment, it eventually needs to be replaced. The question is: how do you know when that time has come?

The Reality of Waterproof Gear Lifespan

Let's start with what we tell every customer: with proper care, your Showers Pass gear should have a long, full life. We unconditionally guarantee our outerwear for two years because we're confident in our construction and materials. But that warranty period isn't the end of your gear's life. It's just the beginning of what we consider the minimum performance window. We hear regularly from riders who’ve been using their gear for 5-20(!) years.

The real lifespan depends on how hard you use it and how well you maintain it. A jacket worn daily for year-round commuting faces different demands than one saved for weekend rides. Both are legitimate uses, but they'll age differently.

Warning Signs: When Your Gear Is Telling You Something

1. The Dreaded Delamination

Delamination happens when the layers of waterproof-breathable fabric separate, usually starting in high-abrasion areas like shoulders, back, and under pack straps. It can also show up where your jacket or pants stretch with movement. Here's what to look for:

  • A bubbled texture on the fabric surface where the face fabric separates from the membrane

  • Tears, flaking or peeling of portions of the membrane

  • Often appears first in areas that see the most friction and wear

  • Fabric that feels and looks different, especially when in high-wear areas.

What causes it: Extended wear combined with inadequate maintenance. Sweat and dirt that work into the jacket can cause multi-layer fabrics to delaminate over time.

Can you fix it? Catch it early, and you can slow the process with meticulous care, keeping those spots clean and free of abrasive grit. But once delamination becomes extensive, the jacket cannot be restored to original performance levels. Reapplying DWR and regular washing will maximize what life remains, but be aware: it may not withstand long, wet rides the way it used to.

2. Persistent Wetting Out

When water stops beading up and instead soaks into the outer fabric, that's "wetting out." A little wetting out after heavy use is normal and can be fixed with DWR renewal if the outer “face” fabric is in good shape. But if you're seeing:

  • Water absorption even after fresh DWR application

  • Fabric that stays saturated during rides

  • The outer layer feels heavy and waterlogged

...it might be time to consider replacement. Sometimes the face fabric is just worn beyond what DWR can help. When this happens, the outer (face) fabric will often take on a softer, almost silk-like hand-feel.

3. Condensation That Won't Quit

Here's something important: some internal moisture is normal! As you work hard and sweat, you can overwhelm the abilities of even the best waterproof-breathable fabrics. Water vapor from your body can build up on the inside faster than it moves through the membrane, causing clamminess.

However, if you're experiencing condensation even when:

  • You're using vents properly

  • You've refreshed the DWR (so the jacket breathes better)

  • You're layering appropriately

  • You're not riding exceptionally hard

...the breathability might be compromised. This can happen as membranes age and accumulate contamination that washing can't fully remove. Over time, the microporous membranes can accumulate dust and oils that clog the pores and can’t be washed out. Our high-end PORLITE membrane uses a 2-component system to reduce this clogging over time, but even the best materials don’t last forever under regular use.

4. Seam Tape Failure

Check your seams regularly. Small patches of loose seam tape can be repaired, but widespread seam tape failure—where tape is peeling away in multiple locations—usually signals that it's time for new gear. The adhesive degrades over time, especially with heavy use and repeated washing.

5. Visible Damage Beyond Repair

We know that pavement, tree branches, and puppies can cause serious damage. Sometimes a jacket meets a fate that patching can't solve. Large tears, abrasion holes, or zipper failure that can’t be repaired. If your Showers Pass gear is within warranty and suffers this kind of damage, we can offer repair or a discount toward replacement. But if it's beyond warranty and beyond repair, it's served you well, and it's time to move on!

6. Worn-out Waterproof Membrane

Microporous membranes are amazing. Modern waterproof outerwear wouldn’t be possible without them…but they don’t last forever. 2-layer or 2.5-layer jackets are lightweight and affordable, but the membrane is exposed to direct wear. 3-layer fabrics add an inner layer that protects the microporous membrane. This slows, but doesn’t stop, the inevitable wear that comes from regular use.

Over time, your waterproof membrane will wear in areas like shoulders, elbows, knees, and crotch. On a 2.5-layer material like in our Syncline Jackets, you’ll see the printed “half-layer” wear away, followed by the membrane itself. It’s a little tougher to spot the wear on 3-layer pieces, but if you suspect membrane wear, you can usually see wear spots when holding a piece of gear up to bright light.

Maintenance: Getting Every Mile Out of Your Gear

Before you decide it's replacement time, make sure you've done everything you can to extend your gear's life:

Wash Regularly

  • Dirt, sweat, and body oils are the enemies of waterproof gear. Wash your jacket according to care instructions—use tech-wash detergent, cold water, and hang dry or tumble on low.

Refresh That DWR

  • After washing, reapply DWR treatment and give it a warm tumble. This revives the outer layer's water-shedding ability. We recommend doing this after heavy use or at least once per season.

Use Vents Strategically

  • Proper ventilation reduces internal moisture and takes stress off the fabric. Open vents, loosen cuffs, and let your gear breathe.

Store It Properly

  • Don't stuff your damp jacket in a corner of your gear closet. Let it dry fully before storage. Mildew and prolonged dampness accelerate degradation. If you know you’ll be storing your gear for a prolonged period, wash it first. Clean gear is happy gear!

The Honest Assessment: Is It Really Done?

Here's a test: Take your jacket out in controlled conditions like a moderately rainy, moderate-effort ride. Pay attention:

  • Does water bead and roll off, or soak in immediately?

  • Are you staying dry, or feeling moisture that's not just sweat?

  • Do you feel confident in this gear, or are you second-guessing it?

If your gear is making you question whether you'll stay dry, it's not doing its job anymore. And if you're hesitating before heading out in bad weather because you don't trust your jacket, that's the biggest sign of all. Weather shouldn’t be a limiting factor in getting outside, so don’t let worn-out gear that’s not confidence-inspiring keep you from your next weekend adventure or chase you off a rainy commute ride.

When to Repair/Maintain vs. Replace

Repair or maintain if:

  • Damage is localized and fixable (small tear, single seam failure, zipper pull-off)

  • The fabric is still in good shape overall

  • There's no delamination or widespread issues

  • Your gear is still within warranty

Replace if:

  • Delamination is extensive (bubbled texture in multiple areas)

  • Seam tape is failing in many locations

  • DWR renewal doesn't help wetting out anymore

  • You've lost confidence in the gear's performance

  • The jacket has served you well for years and simply reached the end of its expected lifespan.

Moving Forward: Honoring Your Gear's Service
